You probably googled it because you have tried therapy before and it didn't work for you. You love information and wondered if it will help you feel better. Maybe you’ve been intrigued by hearing how life changing it was from friends or family. When done correctly, EMDR therapy can be transformative, healing and can absolutely help you feel better.
EMDR therapy can be a difficult concept for even therapists to understand. It is important that you understand what EMDR therapy is, what it's not, and what the experience will be like with me. When disturbing experiences happen to us, they can get locked in our brain in their original form. This can include pictures, sounds, body sensations, feelings, thoughts or beliefs. EMDR therapy is the key to unlock that part of the brain so reprocessing can happen.
It is an 8 phase model that uses your brain's natural processing ability to purposely move from being in a raw emotional state to a narrator of the experience.
It's a process, not a quick fix. EMDR involves several phases, including preparation, processing, and reevaluation. The length of treatment depends on your experiences, goals, and individual needs.
It can be emotionally challenging. Processing difficult memories may temporarily bring up uncomfortable emotions or physical sensations. We'll work together to make sure you have the tools and support to navigate the process.
You remain in control. EMDR is collaborative. You can pause, slow down, or discuss concerns at any point. You don't have to share every detail of your experiences for the therapy to be effective.
EMDR can be provided through traditional therapy sessions or extended EMDR intensives. Both follow the same evidence-based treatment framework, but differ in how treatment time is structured.
The right approach depends on your individual needs, goals, and readiness for processing.
